MAVERICK ADOPTED 5/23/13 LIVING FOREVER FREE IN PA

Please visit The Adventures of Homer and Maverick to watch our baby boy grow!

With hearts turgid with tearful joy, we want to announce that MAVERICK WAS ADOPTED. You all fell in love with his face and soul. Many of you followed grave and dramatic journey through illness to life. Eternally grateful to his devoted foster mother, vet team, and supporters, Maverick beat the odds and persevered. Our beloved boy loves life and howls praise for each morning he’s loved on this earth. His adopters fell in love with his story and knew he was the one for them. They searched us out to adopt him! His perfect imperfections drew us all in, his gregariously loving disposition left them spellbound. Today Maverick lives in the stunning Pocono Mountains with his loving parents and canine brother, Homer. His parents love him unconditionally. Undoubtedly, Maverick stole all of our hearts. Twenty Paws Rescue and our entire team, from Chicago to the south, has learned so much from this boy. What a blessing it is to be alive and well. What a blessing it is to know and love Maverick. What a blessing it is to be loved by him! HE AND WE LOVE YOU ALL! CONGRATULATIONS TO MAVERICK AND HIS FAMILY!!!!

Maverick’s Story. He arrived at the shelter on the evening of 1/20/2013 and immediately put as first on line for euthanasia in the morning. A volunteer of ours happened to be in the shelter that evening and saw him in as the lone dog on the wall for euthanasia dogs. She called us. We took him. Maverick’s journey began. Please read his story. The latest updates are towards the bottom.

Maverick has deep pyoderma (skin infection) and the most severe case of demodex the vet has ever seen. He has bleeding sores all over his body and came in with a gash on the top of his head. His skin is sloughing off every second and he has a critical yeast infection. His eyes are slightly swollen from the infection. He is incredibly itchy and his face is especially uncomfortable because that is where the scabs are the largest. He has NO hair. Not a single one on his entire body and his skin is both bright pink and inflamed or grey and leathery like an elephant.

Our angel is taking ivermectin (liquid) by mouth once a day to treat the demodex and cephalexin (liquid) twice daily to treat his skin infection. He is getting medicated baths with antiseptic shampoo (chlorhexidine, ketoconazole, phytosphingosine) three times a week at home with foster mom (the shampoo has to sit on his skin for 15 minutes each time). He also has kennel cough so he’s getting doxycycline twice a day. He’s completely emaciated so he gets multiple small meals a day and right now he’s eating beef and rice so we don’t overwhelm his stomach with a new food. He will have a standing appointment at his vet once a week on Mondays with a specific doctor who is overseeing his care. This will be ongoing for a minimum 6 months and that is provided we don’t run in to any other hurdles.

The UPLIFTING part of the update!!!! Maverick is a miraculous resilient puppy. He’s remarkable with his foster mom’s boxers. (You can see in attached picture they are his body guards!!) He lives for his couch/snuggle time at night where he burrows into blankies. He has nearly perfected his potty pad training in only two days! Since he is not healthy enough to be vaccinated and it’s freezing he’s doing pad training for now (no paws on the ground).

Maverick is a genuine fighter. With all he has been through and how uncomfortable he must be, he is still full of kisses and tail wags. He is a spunky guy with a lot of sass!  The doctors continue to be astounded that Maverick constantly shows happiness with the tremendous amount of pain he is in.

How your donations will help! They will go towards his weekly vet visits, medications, special, high protein food (once he’s ready), clothes (he wears his clothes and they need to be washed before he can wear them again to remain sanitary) and potty pads. That is before we do any of his regular, routine vetting and again, provided we don’t run into any major health hurdles. With his immune system being brutally compromised, some setbacks are expected and the potential for a couple overnight hospitalizations for IVs and antibiotics are likely. Twenty Paws Rescue could not have saved Mavericks life without the help of each of you that has donated to his care. We know our little man will pull through with the unbroken love and prayers from all of you!  From the bottom of hearts THANK YOU from Linda, Rachel, Kelly, Judy, and Maverick. Each of you will forever own a piece of his heart!

We believe in Maverick!

Maverick update 2/6/13

Maverick had a few setbacks these past 1-2 weeks.  He had issues with his belly holding down food and stool that was abnormal, added to that there were a few days he lost his momentum to play.  At Maverick’s weekly vet visit on 2/4/13 his doctor found a lump on his back thought to be a tumor, we had a biopsy done.  Currently he is finishing up his course of doxycycline for his kennel cough and they added a pro pectali (a paste) because of his particularly loose stool. Our angel is taking ivermectin (liquid) by mouth once a day to treat the demodex and cephalexin (liquid) twice daily to treat his skin infection. He continues his getting medicated baths with antiseptic shampoo (chlorhexidine, ketoconazole, phytosphingosine)he gets three baths a week and we are hoping soon he will be going down to two at home with foster mom (the shampoo has to sit on his skin for 15 minutes each time.

Maverick’s tumor is what they call a Sermoa, which is no more than fluid buildup. Sermoa tumor is usually from an injection or surgery, however in Maverick’s case, we don’t believe before his rescue he was given any vaccines so it could simply be from broken blood vessels. We do have great news to report!  This tumor is NOT cancerous or dangerous in any way. Mavericks vet wants him to have warm compresses on the lump twice a day and it should go down shortly.  Aside from the tumor scare the rest of his check up shows overall improvement. Our hardy little boy has gained 2 lbs. and about 7-9 lbs. total since we rescued him. He has notable improvement on his body and skin and now he’s going down to two baths a week! You can see in some of the new pictures in his album that he is starting to have some hair grow in, and our team is taking votes on what color hair he will have: As of today the front runner is a black and white boy~

The four of us (Linda, Rachel, Kelly, and Judy) sincerely love Maverick it has been a hard few days watching Maverick under the weather and waiting for biopsy results.  As we mentioned in his first update we do expect a few bumps in the road on his journey. Maverick has shown us he NEEDS and WANTS to live.  His daily resilience is astounding to watch and with his fight for life he continues to touch thousands of hearts all over this country.

Maverick update 3/5/13
We apologize for delay in the update on our Maverick. While Maverick is in the loving arms of his foster mom we are helping his doggie friends in need. Maverick is now weighing at 32.3 lbs! His doctor has upped his Ivermectin dosage to .6 once a day. At his vet visit yesterday they did a skin scraping- and he still shows positive for mites. He received the rest of his vaccinations and the skin tags are scar tissue growths. If they become too big we will plan to have them removed. He will be back at the vet in two weeks.

***Maverick update 3/26/13***
This guy is something else with his lust for life now and fun loving personality. Growing to be quite the comic! He now begs to be fed on demand bringing his food and water bowl to his foster mommy when he thinks it’s time to eat! He likes to dump out anything left in his bowl before carrying it around the house asking for more! Maverick has become a thief – he steals everything (his favorite is shoes) and runs to the kitchen cubby hole for “safety” – Maverick LOVES going outside – we think he finally feels like a big boy! He has mastered finding perfect branches all the time constantly thinking they are allowed for snack time. He is confused on the whole potty issue but we are working slowly but surely. He is growing like a weed!!!! His updated health report is as follows: Mavericks skin scrapping two weeks ago showed NO MITES – recheck in 2 weeks and if it comes back negative he can go off the Ivermectin and in a month get neutered!!! There is still a chance that once he is off the Ivermectin the mange may come back but we r only focusing on the positive right now. Maverick weighed in at 35.2. His doctor decided when he goes under for the neuter he is going to take off one of the larger growths as it might be a condition of skin tag like growths called.
Maverick again would like to THANK YOU all for the constant love and support you have given him since he has been saved!
